Lando Norris has come under fire from Red Bull advisor Helmut Marko. The 81-year-old Austrian has expressed his displeasure at Norris’s radio communications during the Grand Prix in Spielberg. The McLaren driver made several fervent attempts to overtake race leader Max Verstappen, all the while the 24-year-old Brit was ranting at his engineer. “Sad,” says Marko.
Helmut Marko watched as Norris attempted to take the lead in the race following a failed pit stop by Max Verstappen. Multiple overtaking maneuvers proved unsuccessful, with the three-time world champion perfectly fending off each attack. Norris slowly lost his patience and continuously ranted over the radio. “What he’s doing is not allowed,” he repeatedly said. In lap sixty-four, disaster struck and Norris’s race ended in a collision. As usual, Marko had his own thoughts on the matter.
Helmut Marko Criticizes Lando Norris’ Behavior
“It was sad how Norris behaved over the radio,” said the Austrian. “This just happens in Formula 1. We should just write this off as a racing incident, although I think it was Norris who occasionally went a bit too far.” Does this have to do with a lack of experience from the McLaren driver? “Absolutely,” said Marko.
Norris Demands Apology from Verstappen
Norris was convinced he was right afterwards and demanded that Verstappen apologize for the incident. “Of course, that doesn’t get you anywhere,” Marko continued. “But they will surely come together for a discussion.” The Red Bull advisor could reveal that the two ‘friends’ did not fly home together. “Normally they share a flight, but this time they traveled separately,” he said. “That must have been nice and quiet for Verstappen.”
