Red Bull advisor Helmut Marko appears to be cautioning Sergio Pérez about his future. The Mexican’s Formula 1 seat is still not secure, even though the Austrian team recently dismissed Daniel Ricciardo. According to Marko, Pérez’s fluctuations are becoming increasingly “unpredictable”.
Daniel Ricciardo drove his last Formula 1 race in Singapore. The Australian was sometimes seen as an option to replace the struggling Sergio Pérez during his time as a Visa RB driver. However, the Mexican is still not safe, even though Ricciardo has now been let go. “There is only a guarantee in Formula 1 sport if you perform accordingly,” Marko warns Pérez.
Pérez started the 2024 season well, with four podium finishes in the first five races, but has been in a slump for a while now. Since the Grand Prix of China, the Mexican has not been on the podium. “Pérez has fluctuations, we know that,” emphasizes Marko. “Especially when the car is adjusted in the short term, he needs more time to adapt.”
Fluctuations
McLaren has meanwhile overtaken the still struggling Red Bull in the constructors’ championship. According to Marko, this is partly due to Pérez’s ongoing poor performances. “That is certainly a factor why McLaren is currently stronger than us when it comes to driver pairs,” says the Austrian. “In terms of speed, he can do it. He just has fluctuations that are becoming increasingly unpredictable.”
