Rumors are swirling that Jack Doohan is on the brink of signing a new Formula 1 contract with Alpine. The 21-year-old Australian has been serving as a reserve driver for the team for some time, but is expected to secure a permanent spot on the grid from 2025 onwards. WEC driver Mick Schumacher, who is also vying for a contract with the French team, appears to have missed out on this opportunity.
According to reports, Jack Doohan’s contract is all but sealed – we’re just waiting for the official announcement. “Multiple sources report that the formalities will be concluded shortly,” says the English medium. The young Australian, son of five-time motor champion Mick Doohan, has already tested several times this year with older Alpine cars.
The reserve driver has been a candidate for Esteban Ocon’s seat for some time; the Frenchman is leaving for Haas next season. Pierre Gasly has signed a new contract with Alpine. With the arrival of advisor Flavio Briatore, the team seemed to focus on Carlos Sainz for a while, but he has since secured a new contract with Williams. Mick Schumacher, who is racing for Alpine’s WEC team this year, is also vying for Ocon’s seat.
After a disappointing first half of the season, it’s clear that there’s still turmoil within the French racing stable. In the run-up to the Belgian GP, team boss Bruno Famin revealed that he would be resigning after the summer break. We now know that Hitech GP team boss Oliver Oakes will be taking over from him.
