Former Formula 1 driver Jacques Villeneuve has expressed his disappointment over the departure of Daniel Ricciardo from the premier class. The Canadian was a harsh critic of the Australian’s performance last season, but his intention was merely to spark a discussion about driver choices. Therefore, Villeneuve is pleased that Ricciardo remains immensely popular.

Daniel Ricciardo had to bid farewell to Formula 1 after the Singapore Grand Prix. The Australian had previously received criticism for his driving, including from former driver Jacques Villeneuve. The Canadian was particularly harsh on the former Red Bull driver during the Montreal Grand Prix, even suggesting that Ricciardo should leave the premier class. The two exchanged insults throughout the rest of the weekend.

After Singapore, Villeneuve’s prediction indeed came true, but the Canadian now says he is not happy with the departure of the honey badger. “It never occurred to me that I wanted to be proven right,” Villeneuve tells Mirror Sport. “It’s not about destroying someone, but you have to look at the reality. I think people realized: ‘Okay, Jacques has a good point, let’s delve into it’, and that happened. I’m happy about that.

According to Villeneuve, his intention was merely to stimulate discussion. “My feelings would not be different if Daniel Ricciardo had stayed with Red Bull. I’m not saying, ‘Oh, I’m happy now that he’s left F1’. I’m just glad that I’ve brought attention to the reality,” said the Canadian.

Popularity

Villeneuve even expresses happiness that Ricciardo, despite his departure, remains immensely popular among Formula 1 fans. “Daniel still has a fantastic image and a great career, it hasn’t harmed him,” concludes the former racer.
