Formula 1 continues to gain traction in the United States, with the wildly popular Netflix series Drive to Survive drawing in more American fans. Currently, three Grand Prix races are held on American soil. Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris has also developed a fondness for Formula 1, particularly for Lewis Hamilton.
Kamala Harris recently appeared on The Howard Stern Show, a popular radio program in the US. In addition to the usual campaign discussions, the presidential candidate also shared her hobbies and interests. It turns out, Harris has been a big fan of Formula 1 and Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton for a few years. “It’s so good,” Harris said about her passion for the premier class. “We really love watching it. Our whole family can enjoy it.”
Lewis Hamilton: A Favourite Amongst Presidential Candidates
Due to her obligations as a presidential candidate, she has had little time to follow all the Grand Prix in recent months. The various time zones in which the races take place pose an additional challenge for the American. “No, I really can’t watch everything,” she said. “Lately, I’ve been too busy campaigning. It also depends on where they’re racing and the time of day. You often have to get up early.” As the calendar is generally aligned with European viewers, American fans often have to sit in front of the television in the early morning hours to follow Formula 1.
Nevertheless, she advised the American public to give the sport a chance. “Once you start watching, you can’t really stop,” said Harris. “There’s a good chance you’ll get addicted.” When asked by presenter Howard Stern who her favourite driver is, Harris replied, “Lewis Hamilton, of course.”
