Kevin Magnussen Poised to Exit Formula 1 as Haas Eyes New Talent and Opportunities Beyond the Grid Loom

June 28th, 2024, 9:30 AM

As the driver’s carousel spins at full speed, it’s highly likely that we’ll bid farewell to Kevin Magnussen next year. The Danish driver has had a challenging season with Haas, and his chances of contract renewal are dwindling – young talents like Oliver Bearman are already waiting in the wings. Magnussen believes there are plenty of opportunities for him outside of Formula 1.

Despite Haas having two seats up for grabs, it’s widely assumed in the paddock that Kevin Magnussen will bow out next year. While the Danish driver is often praised for his defensive skills, he has mainly accumulated penalty points this year. Haas, the American team, seems to have set their sights on Oliver Bearman, the Ferrari talent who has already completed several free practice sessions with the team. Esteban Ocon, who will be left out at Alpine in 2025, is also said to have made a good impression in Kannapolis.

‘There Must Be a Career Outside F1’

There aren’t many rumors surrounding Magnussen – many experts quietly assume that the Dane is in his final season in Formula 1. Speaking to the media in Austria, the 31-year-old driver assured that there are still discussions about a new contract. However, he also seems to be considering a future outside the premier class. After nearly ten years in the midfield, he is open to seeking a new challenge.

“I’ve driven in the midfield every year in Formula 1,” said Magnussen, who debuted for McLaren in 2014. “I’m now 31 years old and I’m starting to think that if I end my career in the midfield, it would leave a hollow feeling.” The Dane follows enough other racing classes to know that there are still victories to be had elsewhere. “I was watching Le Mans and the Indy 500, and the guys who win there look very happy,” he explained. “For me, there must also be a career outside of Formula 1. I’ve had a taste of it when I wasn’t driving here, and it was a great life.”
