Lando Norris, the McLaren driver, is not ready to slow down in his title fight against Red Bull’s Max Verstappen. Despite Verstappen’s lead in the drivers’ championship, Norris believes the Austrian team is still a threat. This motivates him and his team to continue working hard.
Norris dominated the race in Singapore, finishing a substantial twenty seconds ahead of Verstappen. This victory reduced his deficit to the current world champion to 52 championship points. However, Norris believes this gap is still too large to take it easy.
“Alone? That’s still a lot of points, especially if Max finishes second. The gap is not decreasing fast enough,” responds Norris, when asked about his current deficit by Channel 4.
Understanding the Gap
Norris has a clear understanding of why the gap between the two leaders in the drivers’ championship is still significant. “I feel like I’ve performed well in recent months. Various circumstances have not led to results like (in Singapore),” explains the British driver. “I wish I was closer to the championship lead. We’ve taken things as they come, but we’re making progress.”
Too Quickly Dismissed
Norris also knows that his team must continue to work hard if they want to experience more “easy” races, like the dominant victory in Singapore. “The team is doing great, but we’re up against Red Bull. People are too quick and too easy to write them off,” warns Norris.
“When you’re up against Red Bull, you’re up against Max. They’ve dominated the sport in recent years,” continues the McLaren driver. “They’re tough competitors. I feel like people are too relaxed. If you have Max and Red Bull behind you, they’ll do everything they can.”
