Liam Lawson’s aggressive driving style has not only earned him praise; in Mexico, the young Visa RB driver collided with Sergio Pérez. This has led to strong criticism from Red Bull advisor Helmut Marko, who would like to see Lawson drive more diplomatically against drivers from the sister team.
Lawson Collides with Pérez During Duel
During the Mexican Grand Prix, Lawson started twelfth and quickly had Pérez in his mirrors. When the Mexican launched an attack on the inside at turn four, Lawson closed the door. This led to an exciting battle until the next turn, where Lawson forced Pérez off the track. The collision resulted in a damaged sidepod on Pérez’s car, and he ultimately finished last as a result.
Marko Criticizes: ‘Not How It Should Be Between Sister Teams’
Marko was clear about where the blame lay after the race: “We are sister teams and Lawson should not race so hard against a Red Bull driver,” the Austrian stated. He emphasized that he appreciates Lawson’s aggressive approach, but this is not appropriate in a duel with the other team within the Red Bull family. Lawson is given the opportunity to prove himself, but he will have to learn that aggressive driving against drivers from the sister team comes with some nuance – especially if you aspire to secure a permanent spot within the team.
Christian Horner added that Lawson has apologized to Pérez. “Liam has apologized, and lessons will be learned from this,” Horner told the media.
