Thanks to Lewis Hamilton, commentators David Croft and Martin Brundle have landed roles in the new Formula 1 film featuring Brad Pitt. The seven-time world champion is the executive producer of the film, which is set to premiere at the end of June. The project, named F1, aims to provide as realistic a portrayal of the sport as possible. It was for this reason that Hamilton insisted on having Croft and Brundle provide commentary for the fictional races in the film.

Since 2012, David Croft and Martin Brundle have been the go-to commentators for British Formula 1 enthusiasts; they have provided live coverage of the championship for years, from the heyday of Lewis Hamilton to the dominance of Max Verstappen. It’s no surprise that Hamilton, who is closely involved in the production process of the new Formula 1 film, wanted to rope in this duo for a supporting role. Those who watch F1 in the cinema in June will undoubtedly recognize the commentary of Croft and Brundle.

‘Authentic Commentary’

In an interview with The Times, David Croft explained that he has Lewis Hamilton to thank for his Hollywood debut. “He (Hamilton) said: ‘If you want authentic commentary, you need Brundle and Croft,'” said the 54-year-old Brit. “I greatly appreciate that. Martin (Brundle) and I had a total of five or six shooting days. We were also filmed in the commentators’ booth. Hopefully, it sounds as authentic as the commentary fans are used to from us. We were also allowed to deviate from the script occasionally to correctly interpret things – that was fantastic.”

“Brundle is the expert, the analyst, and the man who has raced in these cars,” explained Croft. Martin Brundle competed in one hundred and fifty-eight Grand Prix races between 1984 and 1996. He drove for teams such as McLaren, Brabham, and Jordan, and made it to the podium nine times. “I am the presenter and the journalist,” Croft added. “So I’m not afraid to ask, ‘What do you actually mean by that?'”

In addition to these commentators, many current Formula 1 drivers also play a supporting role. As scenes were filmed during actual race weekends, all drivers make a guest appearance as themselves.
