Lewis Hamilton, honorary citizen of Brazil and a favorite among many fans in São Paulo, had a lackluster race on Sunday. The seven-time world champion repeatedly went off the track and barely finished in the points at Interlagos. He described his W15, which has given him trouble this season, as ‘the worst car he has ever had.’ The Englishman is now eagerly looking forward to the end of his career with Mercedes.

Amid a chaotic water ballet in São Paulo, Lewis Hamilton had the greatest difficulty controlling his Mercedes. His on-board radios spoke volumes: “This is really disastrous,” he railed against race engineer Peter ‘Bono’ Bonnington. In the end, he crossed the finish line in tenth place, earning him one World Championship point. Afterwards, he lamented a “worthless” weekend.

“Saturday was terrible and Sunday was terrible,” a frustrated Hamilton responded after the sprint weekend in São Paulo. “The sprint race was bad, the qualification was bad, the car was just bad all weekend. I’m just trying to focus on other things,” he said, defeated. “I’m not fighting for the championship; I really don’t care where I finish. The car just needs to stay out of the wall, that’s all.

Looking Forward to Christmas

“If they would give me a car that doesn’t bounce off the track, then we might be able to achieve good results,” Lewis Hamilton continued. “With the way things are going now, I’m looking forward to Christmas.” The contrast with a few months ago is stark. In the run-up to the summer break, the Englishman won two Grand Prix, including his home race at Silverstone. “It’s terrible to have such bad races in the second half of the season,” Hamilton lamented.

“We’re trying, but this is actually unacceptable,” he concluded. “The car was really the worst car I’ve ever had this weekend.” George Russell fared better in his W15: he clocked the second fastest time during qualifying and quickly took the lead in the race. However, unfortunate timing for his first pit stop ruined his chances of a victory.
