Liam Lawson has been announced as Red Bull’s new driver for 2025. The racing team made the announcement on Thursday. The New Zealander will replace Sergio Pérez, who stepped down on Wednesday. Lawson had already been driving for Red Bull’s sister team, Visa RB, as a replacement for Daniel Ricciardo since the 2024 Singapore Grand Prix.
After much speculation, Red Bull has finally made a decision. Liam Lawson will be Max Verstappen’s new teammate in 2025. Team boss Christian Horner had previously revealed that the choice was between Lawson and Yuki Tsunoda, and the racing team has now chosen the New Zealander. “Being announced as a driver for Oracle Red Bull Racing is a lifelong dream for me, something I’ve wanted since I was eight and have been working towards,” Lawson reveals in the official press release.
“It’s been an incredible journey so far. I want to thank the entire team at VCARB for their support. The last six races have played a big role in preparing me for this next step,” continues the New Zealander. Lawson scored four valuable points for the team in his shortened season as a Visa RB driver.
The driver from Hastings also says he is looking forward to working with four-time world champion Max Verstappen. “I’m super excited to drive alongside Max and learn from a world champion, I have no doubt that I will learn from his expertise. I can’t wait to get started!”
Racing alongside Max
Christian Horner is also pleased with the news. “Liam’s performances over his two stints at Visa Cash App Racing Bulls have shown that he is not only capable of delivering strong results, but that he is also a true racer, who is not afraid to compete with the best and come out on top. There is no doubt that racing alongside Max, a four-time champion and undoubtedly one of the best drivers ever in F1, is a huge task, but I am confident that Liam can handle that challenge.
