Following the Singapore Grand Prix, Liam Lawson was called up to replace Daniel Ricciardo at Visa RB. Since then, the young New Zealander has been waiting for an official contract. So far, the Italian racing stable has only confirmed team member Yuki Tsunoda for 2025. However, Lawson is also considered a potential candidate for promotion to the Red Bull team. In the run-up to the Qatar Grand Prix, Laurent Mékies revealed that Lawson will be on the grid next year, one way or another.
Visa RB team boss Laurent Mékies was asked about his team’s future line-up in Qatar. The end of the season is approaching, but the Faenza-based team has yet to announce a second driver. The Frenchman emphasized that there has been no change in strategy. “We finish the season and then we study all the data,” he explained. “Then we go to our bosses (Red Bull), and they decide what happens. That process will take place after Abu Dhabi.”
‘Fantastic Line-up’
The big question is whether Liam Lawson or Yuki Tsunoda will be promoted to Red Bull. After a disappointing season from Sergio Pérez, the Mexican is under considerable pressure. Reportedly, only his sponsors are keeping him afloat. Meanwhile, Mékies is more than satisfied with the duo at Visa RB. “When I look at our team, there’s no doubt that we have a fantastic line-up. There’s no discussion about our drivers – what we have is fantastic.”There is no doubt that the current drivers are brilliant for the team and its further development,” he added. “But of course, there is always the bigger Red Bull picture – ultimately, it’s in our DNA to develop drivers for the wider Red Bull family. After Abu Dhabi, we will all sit down at the table.” When asked if Liam Lawson will have a seat in Formula 1 next year, Mékies finally replied: “Yes, you could say that.”
