Newly minted Red Bull driver Liam Lawson shares the extent of his family’s sacrifices for his racing career. The New Zealander reveals that his parents even sold their house to finance Lawson’s path to Formula 1. The sacrifice appears to have been worthwhile, as the driver will be on the grid next season as Max Verstappen’s teammate.
Liam Lawson kicked off the winter break on a high note with the official news that he will be Max Verstappen’s new teammate in 2025. The New Zealander has been racing in Formula 1 for Visa RB since the Singapore Grand Prix, replacing Daniel Ricciardo. The driver made enough of an impression for a Red Bull promotion, even outperforming the more experienced Yuki Tsunoda. Although Lawson has only been in Formula 1 for a short time, the New Zealander has already had quite a journey in racing.”In the first twelve months of karting, I finished last every time,” Liam Lawson reflects, speaking to Sky Sports. “I was driving alone at the back of the field, trying to convince my father to buy a better engine.” Lawson was indeed right. Thanks to a new engine, the young driver immediately took the lead in the field.
House Sold
A new engine was just the beginning of the expenses for Lawson’s budding racing career. “My parents sacrificed everything for me as a child. Even just to kart and compete at the front in New Zealand is still incredibly expensive,” says the future Red Bull driver. Lawson reveals that his parents even sold their house. “My parents currently don’t have a house, because I grew up karting and moved out. And for my siblings, my entire family has given up a lot for me to be able to do this.”
