Logan Sargeant’s F1 Future at Risk as Williams Eyes Carlos Sainz Amid Contract Uncertainties

June 19th, 2024, 10:45 AM

Logan Sargeant’s future in Formula 1 hangs in the balance. As James Vowles pulls out all the stops to bring Carlos Sainz to Williams, the young American is gradually being sidelined. After a ‘disappointing’ performance at the Canadian Grand Prix, Vowles insists that Sargeant must turn things around. A new contract seems far from certain.

Team boss James Vowles had already warned Sargeant in February that he needed to work hard to keep his seat. The 23-year-old American had a mediocre debut season in 2023. He is currently lagging behind teammate Alexander Albon and is still waiting for his first points finish. In Canada, Sargeant seemed to be heading for the top ten, but he crashed in lap 25 and ended his race prematurely.

Contract Renewal Uncertain

According to Vowles, Sargeant has not yet earned a new contract. “He (Sargeant) continues to grow,” said the Williams team boss after the race weekend in Montreal. “But is this the level we expect from him? That’s the big question. If he wants to keep his seat, he’s currently doing too little.” However, Vowles also takes some responsibility. “The cars have not always been of the same caliber,” he admitted. “This is partly due to crashes in the first few races, but also to the early introduction of upgrades.”

Search for a Replacement

While Sargeant is trying to keep his head above water, Vowles seems to be actively looking for a replacement. Carlos Sainz is the ultimate target for Williams – the Spaniard has not yet found a new employer for 2025. Vowles praised the Ferrari driver during the weekend in Canada for his brilliant qualities. Whether Sainz will actually join Alexander Albon will be known soon enough. He hopes to make a decision for the upcoming season soon.
