Logan Sargeant, the American Formula 1 driver, has been struggling for some time now. In his second season with Williams, his performance doesn’t seem to have improved much from last year. In 2023, he managed to score just one World Championship point, and in 2024, a top-ten finish is still elusive. Team boss James Vowles expects more from the 23-year-old driver and will soon have to ‘set boundaries’.
While Alexander Albon has already signed a multi-year contract with the British racing team, Logan Sargeant’s future remains uncertain. The American driver disappointed in the first half of the season and is therefore on the chopping block. James Vowles makes no secret of his efforts to bring Carlos Sainz to Williams. Besides the coveted Spaniard, there are plenty of other candidates for the second seat. Valtteri Bottas could return to Grove, but Mercedes junior Andrea Kimi Antonelli is also an option.
Setting Boundaries
According to Vowles, Sargeant has ‘always been given the chance to keep his seat’, although the chance that Williams will continue with the American is now quite small. “I need performances that are at the level of Alex (Albon),” said the team boss in the run-up to the British Grand Prix. “We have to set boundaries at some point. For 2025, but maybe even for this year.” Is there a driver change coming soon for the Brits?
Vowles also takes responsibility and admits that Sargeant has not always had the best equipment. “There have been several races where we did not give him the right equipment,” he admitted. During the Australian GP, the American driver had no equipment at all; he had to give his FW46 to Albon, after he had written off his own car in VT1. “But that has not been the case in the last few races,” Vowles continued. “Sargeant wants to perform and I want to give him every chance he can get. After that, we can assess what he is worth.”
