Sky Sports analyst Martin Brundle appears to be taking a hard stance against Max Verstappen. The British commentator criticizes the Dutch driver for allowing himself to be swept up in the controversy surrounding his FIA-imposed penalty. Brundle also believes that the drivers’ unrestrained swearing, even in the heat of the moment, is unnecessary.
During the Grand Prix at the Marina Bay Street Circuit, the Dutchman commendably raced to second place. Sky Sports analyst Martin Brundle also noticed Verstappen’s impressive performance and commends the driver for his excellent race. The British commentator, therefore, doesn’t understand why Verstappen allows himself to be distracted by the whole issue surrounding his FIA-imposed penalty.
Max Verstappen’s Distraction
“I’m not sure why Max allows himself to be distracted and drawn into a slanging match with the FIA,” writes Brundle about Max Verstappen for Sky Sports. “It’s wasted energy and serves no good purpose for him, but he still largely refused to answer questions in the post-race press conference.”
Responsibility
“The drivers are not children, I admit, and we know they sometimes swear in an attempt to prevent radio messages from being broadcast,” continues Brundle. “Of course, they will also say ‘don’t broadcast our radio messages if you don’t like the language’.”
However, according to the analyst, the drivers have their responsibility, especially since many young fans watch motorsport. “It may be street language, but they represent themselves, their family, their country, their team, and Formula 1 itself. Swearing freely in the heat of battle is not necessary.”
