Max Verstappen still harbors the ambition to participate in the renowned 24 Hours of Le Mans. This long-distance race is one of the most iconic events in motorsport. Now that the Dutchman has won four Formula 1 titles, he is increasingly flirting with challenges in other racing classes. Verstappen hopes to participate in the near future, potentially alongside former Le Mans winner Fernando Alonso.
In the past Formula 1 season, Max Verstappen repeatedly expressed interest in Le Mans. He revealed that he would like to race with someone like Fernando Alonso. His father, Jos Verstappen, who is currently making a name for himself in rally driving, could also join the team. In a conversation with Mirror Sports, the Red Bull champion indicated that his plans are becoming increasingly concrete.
Third Teammate
“It’s in the back of our minds, we know we want to do it,” Verstappen said about a possible participation with Fernando Alonso. “My father is still very good, but he just doesn’t feel like it.” The 27-year-old Dutchman admitted that he fortunately does not lack potential teammates. “It’s fine, we just have to see what happens. There are many good drivers to choose from. I have many friends who race, so in the end it will be difficult to choose someone,” he joked.
Fernando Alonso and Nico Hülkenberg are the only drivers on the current grid who have already won at Le Mans. The Spaniard triumphed in 2018 and 2019, while his German colleague won in 2015. Due to the increasingly busy Formula 1 calendar, there are few opportunities for drivers to compete in other racing classes. However, it is expected that Max Verstappen and Fernando Alonso – given their status at Red Bull and Aston Martin respectively – could strike a deal.
