The Mercedes Formula 1 team has reportedly hired private detectives to trace the source of an anonymous email. The German racing stable, along with other key figures in the paddock, recently received a threatening message alleging that the team was deliberately sabotaging driver Lewis Hamilton. The police have ruled that no criminal offense has been committed.

Renowned motorsport news outlet, Crash.net, reported on Wednesday that Mercedes has employed private detectives to further investigate the email. The message appears to have been written by a Mercedes employee and warns the team to stop sabotaging Lewis Hamilton. This is in reference to the noticeably cold tires that were fitted to his car in Canada.

The British newspaper, Daily Mail, published the entire email on its website. The subject of the text is telling – “A potential death sentence for Lewis Hamilton”. The anonymous writer claims that the team is doing everything it can to ‘systematically sabotage’ Hamilton. Mercedes team boss, Toto Wolff, is singled out as the main culprit. The Austrian is described as ‘sly’ and ‘vengeful’ since Hamilton announced he is moving to Ferrari.

Conspiracy Theorist

Wolff has since labeled the anonymous sender of the message a ‘conspiracy theorist’. “We receive these kinds of emails all the time,” he said. “It’s very disturbing, especially when death and such matters are mentioned. I have asked the police to investigate this thoroughly – online abuse must stop. People should no longer be able to hide behind their phones and computers when they insult teams and drivers.”

The British authorities have since announced that ‘no criminal offenses have been committed’. As a result, further investigation into the source of the message has been halted. Mercedes has reportedly taken matters into its own hands and hired private detectives to identify the perpetrator.
