Despite the unpredictable performances and fluctuations in this Formula 1 season, Mercedes remains resolute. Team boss Toto Wolff emphasizes that they do not view 2025 as a gap year. The team, which has experienced several highs and lows this season, is focused on maintaining a competitive level and fighting for victories, even in the lead-up to the new 2026 regulations.
Victory Remains a Priority
Wolff, in a conversation with Motorsport.com, emphasized their philosophy. “The question of whether we sacrifice 2025 for the following year is constantly asked. Niki Lauda always said: ‘Do you want to win this race or the next?’ My answer was always ‘both’. We want to think simplistically because every race is important.” The Austrian does not believe that teams will consider 2025 as a gap year and will not switch off their machines, even if the chance of winning is uncertain. With an eye on 2026, it’s clear that Mercedes is not only focused on building a future-proof car but also on maintaining a competitive spirit in the current season and in 2025.
Unpredictable Competition
Wolff acknowledges that the team is not always performing at its peak. “We are no longer the leading team and that is a reality we have to deal with. The inconsistency in our performances is hard to understand, but so is that of other teams. It seems as if a winning team does not get further than P6 in the next race.” According to Wolff, McLaren is currently the only team showing stability.
With teams like Ferrari coming and going in terms of their performances, it’s a challenge for Mercedes to find their place in the competition. Wolff points out that even the most experienced teams can’t always predict what’s going to happen. “Before the summer, everyone had written off Ferrari, but they came back stronger. This shows how unpredictable the competition is.”
