The Formula 1 and the Autodromo Nazionale Monza have reached a new agreement ensuring that the Italian GP will remain on the calendar until 2031. The organization, which considers Monza one of the most iconic tracks on the Formula 1 calendar, wants to secure a permanent spot for The Temple of Speed, while other European circuits will rotate in the future.
Prior to the 2024 Italian GP, Monza underwent significant improvements. The circuit was resurfaced, and new tunnels were constructed beneath the track. These modifications, backed by the Italian government and the Lombardy region, were intended to enhance safety and fan experience. Thanks to these improvements, the Italian circuit has secured its place on the calendar. The current contract, which was set to run until 2025, has been extended until 2031.Monza has long been a favorite among fans. Since the circuit made its debut on the Formula 1 calendar in 1950, it has been known as a track where cars reach extremely high speeds. This quickly earned the circuit the nickname Temple of Speed. This year, Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc was crowned the winner, much to the delight of the ecstatic Tifosi. Previously, drivers such as Max Verstappen, Lewis Hamilton, Michael Schumacher, and Ayrton Senna have all claimed victories at Monza.
Busy Schedule
“Monza is the heart of Formula 1 history,” said Formula 1 CEO Stefano Domenicali in an official press release. “The recent improvements and planned investments demonstrate a strong commitment to the future of our sport in Italy. I want to thank everyone who has contributed to this, from the Automobile Club d’Italia to our passionate fans.”
While the contract with Monza has been extended, other circuits are still waiting for news from the organization. For instance, the Dutch GP in Zandvoort has an agreement until 2025. After that, the race will lose its permanent spot on the calendar and will rotate every other year. The Dutch GP is in a pool with three other races, namely Barcelona, Spa-Francorchamps, and Imola.
