Despite successful winter tests in Bahrain, McLaren team boss Andrea Stella predicts an uncertain season. The Papayas, who clinched the constructor’s title last year, are still considered favorites for a new championship ahead of the season opener in Australia. However, McLaren remains cautious of the formidable competition and looks forward to this new challenge with anticipation.
Based on the winter tests, Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri seem to have the best cars again. In the race simulations, no one could beat the McLaren MCL39, although rivals Red Bull, Ferrari, and Mercedes were close behind. Despite these initial signs of success, the reigning world champions are bracing for an extremely exciting season. With the current regulations in force for one more year, the margins are narrower than ever.
“I’m looking forward to starting the season in Melbourne,” Lando Norris said in an official press release. “It’s a special circuit for me – I made my debut here for McLaren in 2019. This circuit has suited us well in the past and hopefully, we can carry some of our momentum from 2024.” The 25-year-old Brit finished second in the drivers’ championship last year but is considered one of the favorites for the title this season. “We had a productive test,” he confirmed. “That being said, we won’t know where we really stand until the first qualifying session. I expect a very exciting season with many great battles. There’s a lot of competition, which hopefully makes it even more exciting for the fans – I’m definitely ready for it.”
Home Race for Piastri
Teammate Oscar Piastri is equally excited. He is entering his third season in Formula 1 and is also racing at home in Melbourne. “The support I experience in Melbourne is phenomenal,” he explained. “It still feels surreal to hear so many fans shouting my name. It means a lot to me, and that’s why I want to thank everyone who encourages me. I might be a bit biased, but the atmosphere at the Albert Park Circuit is always amazing. As it’s the season opener, I’m sure it will be even grander and better. This race means the most to me.”
Finally, team boss Andrea Stella expressed cautious optimism, although he remains wary about the power dynamics. “Everyone at McLaren has prepared for one of the most competitive and unpredictable Formula 1 seasons ever,” he explained. “The Albert Park Circuit provides an opportunity for a good race.”
