Oscar Piastri reveals a significant advantage he holds over his competitors, thanks to his education. The Australian hopes to contend for the world title in 2025, after primarily serving as the second driver in 2024.

Oscar Piastri played a pivotal role in securing McLaren’s first constructor’s title since 1998 in 2024. The Australian hopes to vie for the driver’s title next season and already sees one significant advantage he has over his rivals. Piastri tells Sky Sports that he studied technical subjects in school, which gives him an edge when discussing his car’s performance.

“Mathematics, physics, and computer science. I would probably have become an engineer if I hadn’t become a driver,” reveals the Melbourne-based driver. “It’s beneficial to understand what different changes to the car do and to have an idea about the setup and so on. I think it (becoming an engineer) would have been the next path I would have taken if I couldn’t have become a driver.”

Regulation Change

Piastri’s technical knowledge could prove very beneficial for McLaren in 2025, as a new regulation change stipulates that the gap in a closed rear wing can only be 13.4 millimeters. The change is a response to McLaren’s controversial ‘mini-DRS’. As a result, drivers will need to adjust their setups among other things to compensate for the performance loss.
