Oscar Piastri asserts that he feels no additional pressure now that he is the only Australian on the grid. Following the Singapore Grand Prix, Formula 1 bid farewell to Daniel Ricciardo, also an Aussie and one of the most popular drivers of the past fifteen years. Piastri has always looked up to the affable Ricciardo and indeed misses his compatriot, though he also looks forward to competing against Lawson.

After the last Grand Prix in São Paulo, Oscar Piastri was asked about Daniel Ricciardo. During the American triple header, Piastri was once again the only Australian on the grid. “I don’t feel any extra pressure,” he admitted honestly. “Of course, it’s sad that Daniel (Ricciardo) is no longer on the grid. He’s a great guy and someone I’ve always looked up to. It’s a shame to see him go.”

Australia versus New Zealand?

Ricciardo was replaced by 22-year-old Liam Lawson, a Red Bull reserve driver born and raised in New Zealand. “It’s a great opportunity for Liam (Lawson) to show what he’s got,” said Piastri. “That’s just part of this sport; all developments have both negative and positive consequences. Perhaps that also brings less pressure. I’ve gained someone from ‘next to’ Australia,” he joked. “Moreover, I get along well with Lawson. I’ve raced against him in the past.”

As with many countries, there is a friendly rivalry between Australia and New Zealand. However, Piastri does not expect this to cause friction between him and Lawson. “I hope not,” he noted. “Given the differences between our cars, something would have to go seriously wrong if we encounter each other on the track.” McLaren is currently defending first place among the constructors, while Visa RB is embroiled in a battle for sixth place.
