Oscar Piastri has embarked on his third season in Formula 1 as one of the contenders for the world title. The MCL39 is currently the most powerful car on the grid, and after assisting Lando Norris in his title fight last year, Oscar Piastri is now only ten points behind his teammate in the drivers’ championship. Piastri is clear about his title ambitions.
“I’m certainly not in the sport just to play second fiddle. I’m here because I want to become world champion,” Oscar Piastri tells The Times. “Over the past seasons, I’ve proven more than anyone else that I have what it takes.” The Australian has already claimed three Grand Prix victories, including the win at the 2025 China GP.
However, Piastri does not believe he has reached his peak as a driver yet. “I don’t think I’m at the pinnacle of what I’m capable of, but I’m doing my utmost to get there as quickly as possible. I know that when I have my best weekends, I’m good enough to beat the very best.”
Team Leader?
The Australian signed a contract extension with McLaren earlier this month, ensuring he will stay with the British racing team until at least 2028. Piastri reveals that he never considered moving to another team. “McLaren, primarily from the perspective of the car, but also simply from the team environment perspective, is where I want to be. Many people would want to be here. I have every confidence that I can win with this team.”
So, isn’t Piastri afraid that Lando Norris, who is also currently under contract with McLaren, will be assigned the leading role by the team? The Australian believes he could become the team leader. “If I didn’t have confidence in that, I might not have signed this long contract.”
