In the lead-up to the GP of China, Pirelli has unveiled a new trophy for the driver who clocks the fastest time during the sprint qualifying. While a smaller version of the well-known Pirelli tyre is usually awarded after a regular qualifying, the Italian company has opted for a new design for the sprint races. The trophy was created in honour of the tyre supplier’s 500th Grand Prix, but it has not been well received on social media.
A picture of the new trophy, which will be awarded for the first time on Friday in the run-up to the GP of China, has caused much hilarity on the internet. “It looks awful,” writes one user. “This is the ugliest cup I’ve ever seen,” adds another. Some fans even question whether Pirelli has delivered a trophy at all. “What am I looking at?” multiple messages read. “Is this some kind of Pirelli pepper mill?” someone finally comments.
Five Hundred Grand Prix
At Pirelli, they remain unabatedly enthusiastic about the new trophy. The design refers to the achievement of 500 Grand Prix in the 2025 season. During the Dutch GP, the Italian company will have officially served as the tyre supplier for Formula 1 five hundred times. “The trophy contains a relief version of the special logo that marks our 500th race,” Pirelli wrote in an official press release. “In addition, we will personalize the trophy at the end of all sprint qualifications with a plaque bearing the winner’s initials.”
