As we approach the 2025 season, the racing field is set for a significant shakeup after a year of stability. Three rookies are set to make their debut, including Mercedes’ protege, Andrea Kimi Antonelli. Despite a short-lived first free practice session, former driver David Coulthard believes we shouldn’t underestimate Antonelli.
Leading up to the Italian Grand Prix, the replacement for Lewis Hamilton was officially announced. Andrea Kimi Antonelli, the 18-year-old talent from Mercedes’ breeding ground, will be racing alongside George Russell next year. During his first free practice session at the Monza circuit, the young driver made a mistake and crashed his W15 into the wall. However, Coulthard believes that he will be well-prepared for the start of next year.
“Antonelli probably has the best preparation,” said the Scot in the Formula for Success podcast. “He has already tested a lot with old cars and had the chance to learn from a seven-time world champion. He must be ready. He faces a big challenge next to George Russell, who was consistently the fastest at Mercedes this year.”
Rookie Year
Formula 1 commentator Alex Jacques believes that the Italian can’t afford any more mistakes. “If he can’t beat George Russell, everyone will be keeping a close eye on Antonelli,” he added. In addition to the young Mercedes talent, two more rookies are making their debut: test and reserve driver Jack Doohan will debut at Alpine, and Formula 2 driver Oliver Bearman will join Haas. “There will be some great storylines emerging next year,” concluded Jacques. “The rookies will certainly be part of that.”
