What sets Max Verstappen apart from Lewis Hamilton? Former Formula 1 driver Ralf Schumacher is not afraid to answer this question. The German particularly praises Verstappen’s abilities, noting that the Dutch driver always seems to extract something extra from his car.
With his fourth world championship, Max Verstappen joins an illustrious group, equalling the records of Alain Prost and Sebastian Vettel. Only three drivers, including Michael Schumacher and Lewis Hamilton, have won the world title more often. However, Ralf Schumacher, brother of the legendary German driver, asserts that Verstappen possesses more of a world champion’s qualities than Hamilton does.
“Max Verstappen truly has the ability to give that little bit extra, just like those exceptional world champions before him. He makes the difference,” Schumacher tells Sky Germany. “There aren’t many like him, and frankly, I don’t count Lewis Hamilton among them.” While the former Formula 1 driver finds the Briton “exceptional”, he believes that Hamilton, like Sebastian Vettel, needs “the perfect environment and car” to succeed.
‘Absolutely Incredible’
According to Schumacher, Verstappen does not need such conditions. In 2024, the Dutchman even clinched his fourth world title, despite the quirks of his RB20. “Despite all the setbacks, (Verstappen) always worked well with his team and always delivered,” says Schumacher. “If you compare him to his teammate, it’s absolutely incredible.
