The water spectacle during the São Paulo Grand Prix has claimed many victims. Over the weekend, the red flag was raised no less than six times. The repair costs after the race in Brazil are therefore quite steep. On social media, diligent fans keep track of the damage classification for the current Formula 1 season. It appears that nearly five million dollars worth of damage was done at Interlagos.
After heavy rainfall on Saturday afternoon, the qualification for the São Paulo Grand Prix was already postponed until Sunday morning. Even then, the rain was pouring down. Nevertheless, the qualification went ahead, with all the consequences that entailed. The session turned into a real battlefield; the red flag was waved no less than five times. Two Williams cars, two Aston Martins, and one Ferrari had to bite the dust.
Damage Classification
During the race, it remained rainy in São Paulo. Four drivers failed to bring their cars back to the garage intact, including Carlos Sainz and Franco Colapinto. On the online platform Reddit, fans have kept track of the repair costs for the so-called damage classification. This keeps track of which drivers have caused the most damage by the end of the season. This ranking is jokingly called the Destructors’ Championship.
According to the latest calculations, São Paulo has been the most expensive race weekend to date. In total, nearly five million dollars’ worth of damage has been incurred, equivalent to over four and a half million euros. The previous record holder was the Monaco Grand Prix. Thanks in part to a severe crash by Sergio Pérez, the repair costs after that weekend exceeded four million euros. Pérez, incidentally, still leads in the damage standings. The total repair costs for all his crashes so far amount to over four and a half million euros.
