In the lead-up to the season finale in Abu Dhabi, there has been plenty of speculation and discussion about the future of Sergio Pérez. According to recent reports, the Mexican’s new contract will be terminated prematurely, and he will serve as an ambassador for Red Bull next year – following in the footsteps of Daniel Ricciardo in 2023. Meanwhile, Liam Lawson is in pole position to replace him. But why is this young New Zealander being put forward?
The exit rumors surrounding Sergio Pérez are intensifying. The new two-year contract he signed this summer is reportedly being terminated. It is said that the Mexican will receive a substantial severance package and a role as an ambassador for Red Bull. Liam Lawson, who earlier this season inherited Daniel Ricciardo’s seat, is being put forward as his replacement.
It is notable that Sergio Pérez has been allowed to drive for Red Bull for so long. In the past, drivers like Pierre Gasly and Alexander Albon were sacrificed for much less. All three had to bow to Max Verstappen, although Pérez reached a new low this season. While the Dutchman secured his fourth title, Checo is still in eighth place.
Why Liam Lawson?
The 22-year-old Liam Lawson is in pole position to replace Pérez. In this case, Yuki Tsunoda misses out. The Japanese driver has already spent four years with the junior team Visa RB, formerly AlphaTauri, but Red Bull has never really indicated that he has a chance of promotion. In the past, he has shown aggression over the radio and repeatedly made costly mistakes. Although he has significantly improved in 2024, it may not be enough to convince the Red Bull team management.
Meanwhile, Liam Lawson has had little opportunity to prove himself. The New Zealander was allowed to substitute for Daniel Ricciardo in five races in 2023 and joined Visa RB full-time from the GP in Austin this year. In the qualifiers, he has so far always been outperformed by his Japanese teammate, although he did finish ahead of Tsunoda in two races. If Lawson indeed gets promoted, Formula 2 driver Isack Hadjar would have to move up to Visa RB. “I expect to have more information next week,” Lawson said to Formula1.com on Friday. “I’m just focusing on securing a seat and the team will decide the rest. I do feel ready to move to Red Bull. I would seize the opportunity to compete against Max Verstappen with both hands.”
