Red Bull Tensions Escalate as Mercedes Boss Sides with Jos Verstappen Amidst Austrian Grand Prix Controversy

June 30th, 2024, 11:36 AM

Tensions were high leading up to the Austrian Grand Prix. Team boss Christian Wolff clashed with Jos Verstappen over his participation in the so-called Legends Parade. Verstappen senior labeled Red Bull as ‘a kindergarten’ and decided against his laps in the RB8. Toto Wolff, who is keen to keep the Verstappens on his side, got involved in the latest Red Bull controversy.

It seems that the relationship between Christian Horner and Jos Verstappen has cooled off for good. The latter revealed on Friday that Horner had demanded not to film him during his honorary laps around the Red Bull Ring. Verstappen even suggested to Viaplay that his brakes had been tampered with. He immediately cancelled his participation in the Legends Parade. Toto Wolff, who is still seeking a collaboration with his son, naturally sides with Verstappen.

Mercedes Team Boss Expresses Alignment with Jos Verstappen

“Jos and I are on the same page,” says the Mercedes team boss. This strategic comment from Wolff indicates his ongoing efforts to lure Max Verstappen away from Red Bull. Over the past few months, the Austrian has frequently praised the Dutch champion. “Of course, that was meant to be a bit funny,” he laughed. “But there is indeed a serious thought behind it. It’s my job to contribute to Mercedes’ performance – then you should also be able to put a good driver in the car.”

Red Bull’s Situation Gradually Deteriorating, According to Wolff

Wolff believes he sees the situation at Red Bull gradually deteriorating. He particularly sympathizes with his compatriot and RB advisor, Helmut Marko. The 81-year-old Marko seemed to lose some influence in the aftermath of the scandal surrounding Christian Horner. “I get along well with Helmut and I have a lot of respect for him – I see that he is affected by what is currently happening at Red Bull,” says Wolff. “The team no longer has the good reputation it had under Dietrich Mateschitz.”
