Red Bull’s Bold Strategy: Extensive Upgrades and Engine Risks at the 2024 Spanish Grand Prix

June 21st, 2024, 12:45 PM

As the Spanish Grand Prix approaches, teams have made significant modifications to their racing cars. Almost all major teams are introducing crucial upgrades at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya. Red Bull, in particular, has made substantial changes to the RB20. However, these latest revisions could potentially cost Max Verstappen dearly – the Dutch driver risks a grid penalty due to these changes.

Red Bull’s Risky Revisions

Alongside adjustments to the floor and air intakes, Red Bull has equipped Max Verstappen’s car with a new engine – the fourth of the season. This means the three-time world champion has reached his limit. If Verstappen uses a fifth engine in 2024, the FIA will be compelled to impose a grid penalty on him.

Complete Overhaul for Car Number 1

The organization confirmed on Friday that the entire powertrain of car number 1 has been replaced. The combustion engine, turbo, MGU-H, and MGU-K are all brand new. Verstappen had a new engine installed in Canada, but it was sacrificed after the second free practice. It remains uncertain whether this model can serve him in the future – old engines can be reused indefinitely.

New Gearbox and Potential Grid Penalties

In addition to a new power source, the Dutch driver is also using a new gearbox. Verstappen is not the only driver who risks a grid penalty – Pierre Gasly has also reached the limit of four engines. Ferrari, Red Bull’s biggest competitor, has a bit more breathing room. Both Carlos Sainz and Charles Leclerc have only used three engines so far.

Looking Forward to the Spanish Grand Prix 2024

As the Spanish Grand Prix 2024 approaches, all eyes are on the teams and their strategies. With significant upgrades and changes, the race promises to be an exciting event. However, the risk of grid penalties for some drivers adds an extra layer of intrigue to the competition.
