Red Bull team boss Christian Horner reveals that there have indeed been discussions with Fernando Alonso about a potential collaboration with the Austrian team. According to the British team boss, Alonso considered various options before signing his contract extension with Aston Martin. Horner has nothing but praise for the Spaniard.

Fernando Alonso announced in April that he would stay with Aston Martin until at least 2026. However, the Spaniard’s decision was not a foregone conclusion. According to Christian Horner, Alonso visited Red Bull earlier this year to discuss a possible collaboration.

“At that time, Sergio’s (Pérez) contract had not yet been extended. As Fernando is a seasoned player, he always wants to know all his options,” Horner reveals to the British Express. “Between him and his manager and advisor of many years, Flavio (Briatore), they always test the market. It shows how hungry and competitive he is.”

Still in Top Form

Red Bull decided in June to extend Pérez’s contract. Despite this, the Red Bull team boss still has high praise for Alonso. “He is still in top form (at 43 years old) and that shows that age is just a number. He is still a very capable Grand Prix driver and if he gets the resources, I’m sure he would be leading,” says Horner. “It’s incredible how long he’s been around, how competitive he is, and what capabilities he has. Two world championships do not do him justice. He should have won more.
