Red Bull’s Christian Horner Issues Ultimatum to Daniel Ricciardo: Prove Your Worth or Risk Losing Your Seat

June 14th, 2024, 10:38 AM

Christian Horner, the team principal of Red Bull Racing, has issued a stern warning to their driver, Daniel Ricciardo. The Australian, an eight-time Grand Prix winner, is yet to secure a new contract in Formula 1. If he wishes to continue with Red Bull’s sister team, he will need to prove his worth in the upcoming races. Currently, he is lagging behind his teammate, Yuki Tsunoda.

During the Canadian Grand Prix, there was finally a glimmer of hope for Daniel Ricciardo. The 34-year-old driver qualified in a commendable fifth place, ahead of Yuki Tsunoda. He also outperformed his teammate in the race, crossing the finish line in eighth place. However, the Japanese driver still ranks significantly higher than Ricciardo in the standings, due to several lackluster performances at the start of the season, which quickly raised doubts.

Red Bull Team Boss Warns Ricciardo: Performance is Key

Red Bull team boss, Christian Horner, has issued a warning to Ricciardo, cautioning him to be on his guard. In a conversation with British broadcaster Sky Sports, Horner explained that the affable Australian has work to do – otherwise, his cheerful demeanor might quickly fade. “Daniel (Ricciardo) has experienced ups and downs this year,” he said. “He knows he needs to perform, and he also knows he hasn’t done enough to be promoted to Red Bull.” The Austrians have already extended the contract of Sergio Pérez.

‘If He Even Wants to Keep His Seat’

If Ricciardo wants to return to Visa RB next year, he will first need to earn a new contract. There are always contenders within the Red Bull teams. “There is still plenty of time,” Horner said. “But Ricciardo will have to work hard if he wants to keep his seat at all.” The 50-year-old team boss knows there is a lot of talent waiting in the Red Bull ranks.

“We have Isack Hadjar who is making a big impression in Formula 2,” Horner explained. The 19-year-old Red Bull junior is currently second in the championship. “And of course, Liam Lawson, who is a truly valuable driver for the team. He is 100% committed to every session and we know what he brings to the table.”
