Red Bull’s Early Dominance Challenged: Verstappen Admits Competitors Making Bigger Strides in F1 Season

June 27th, 2024, 1:19 PM

Red Bull kicked off this season with a bang, seemingly set for another dominant season with the RB20. However, the tables have turned, and their competitors are now sensing an opportunity. “They’ve made bigger strides than us,” admits Max Verstappen at the Red Bull Ring.

“A few teams have naturally switched to a different concept,” begins Max Verstappen during the media session at the Red Bull Motorhome in Austria. “Perhaps they needed a few races to come up with updates, but maybe this was also planned. We knew what we had and we built on that. That gives you a good starting point every year.”

Verstappen indicates that it takes a bit longer for others to get that concept working well. “But once you start moving in the right direction, things can progress quickly. We were already in that development and are now finding it a bit harder to make really big strides,” continues the reigning champion.

The Dutchman fervently hopes that the RB20 has not yet hit its development ceiling. “But at this moment, it’s clear that others have made bigger strides than us. We still need to work on the car’s handling over the kerbstones and bumps and on the balance. We’re working on it, but it’s not something that can be resolved quickly.”
