Is the Monaco Grand Prix a dull race? According to Helmut Marko, the organizers are working on a solution. The recent edition of the ‘crown jewel of Formula 1’ was again uninspiring. There were only four overtakes on the track, while the top ten remained unchanged. Marko suggests that Monaco will be revamped in the future to spice up the action.

Marko, in his column for Speedweek.com, scrutinized the Monaco Grand Prix. He too had to admit that it was not an exciting race. “After the red flag, it was a procession,” wrote the 81-year-old Austrian. “Yet, it’s hard to imagine Formula 1 without Monaco. In that sense, the circuit is like Ferrari – indispensable in the sport. But something really needs to happen.”

Revamping the Monaco Grand Prix

The Red Bull advisor has some ideas to make the weekend more interesting. According to Marko, plans to simply change the track are already on the table. “The easiest thing is to tweak the track a bit,” he wrote. “But there are already plans and ideas for that. Another option is to enforce more pit stops. If you have to stop twice or use all three tire types, it brings a lot more strategy into play.”

Future Regulations and Changes

Marko believes that the new regulations of 2026 could also provide the necessary action. “In 2026, the cars will be smaller and lighter,” he concluded. “But that alone will not be enough, I fear.” Fans have long argued that the large cars are a problem on street circuits like Monaco. The smaller cars of the past were indeed much more manageable in the slow corners.
