Indycar racer Rinus ‘Veekay’ van Kalmthout made a strong impression last weekend in Toronto. Amidst a chaotic race, he kept his cool, finishing eighth after starting from P22.
Van Kalmthout continues his streak of top-10 finishes. A week earlier, he finished fifth and ninth in two races in Iowa. Consistently competing for victories isn’t in the cards this season for the Ed Carpenter Racing driver. He’s had his fair share of sporting and mechanical misfortunes, but often shines by maximizing his performance in each race.
In Toronto, this was once again the case: the eighth place was a fitting reward for a comeback race. Van Kalmthout didn’t let himself be thrown off course when multiple drivers were involved in a crash. Even damage to his front wing, which caused him to fall back to P12, didn’t deter him. ‘Veekay’ carved his way forward and finished in the top-10 once again.
Colton Herta ultimately won the race in Toronto. Championship leader Alex Palou finished fourth in the Canadian city. Just like in Formula 1, the Indycar drivers now have a few weeks of rest. The next race is on August 17, in Madison (UST).
