Reportedly, McLaren has released 19-year-old Brazilian, Gabriel Bortoleto, from his contract, allowing him to join another Formula 1 team. Bortoleto, who drove from the last position to victory in the main race of Formula 2 in Monza, has allegedly caught the attention of Sauber. The Swiss racing team still has one seat available for 2025.

Speculations Around Bortoleto’s Future

The first time Gabriel Bortoleto’s name was linked with Sauber/Audi was in early August. The Italian media reported that Mattia Binotto, the new team boss of the future Audi project, had shown interest in the young Brazilian. According to Formula1.com, Bortoleto’s name now tops the list of potential drivers.

Uncertainty Over Sauber’s Second Seat

There are speculations about the second Sauber seat, with multiple drivers reportedly showing interest.

Potential Contract with Sauber?

Gabriel Bortoleto is currently under contract with McLaren, as he is part of the British team’s training program. However, according to the Brazilian Formula 1 platform Grande Prêmio, his contract has been renegotiated. This would allow Bortoleto to commit to Sauber. McLaren could provide him with the necessary experience before he potentially takes over the seat of Oscar Piastri or Lando Norris in the future. Thus, McLaren seems willing to ‘loan him out’.

Gabriel Bortoleto is seen as a promising driver. Last year, he won the Formula 3 championship with Trident, after which he moved up to Formula 2 with Invicta Racing. He is currently in second place in the championship, behind the French-Algerian Isack Hadjar. In 2023, Bortoleto joined McLaren’s training program.
