Rising Star Oliver Bearman Eyes Permanent Seat with Haas in Formula 1 After Impressive Performances

June 17th, 2024, 11:30 AM

Oliver Bearman is set to test with Haas once again in Spain. The 19-year-old Ferrari reserve driver previously took part in a free practice session for the American team in Imola. Many experts are calling for Bearman to secure a contract with Haas next year. According to team boss Ayao Komatsu, he is a serious contender.

The Formula 1 world was introduced to young Oliver Bearman during his debut with Ferrari at the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix. The then 18-year-old Brit was forced to step in for Carlos Sainz. Bearman finished a strong race in seventh place, immediately catching the attention of competitors. Haas, a customer team of the Scuderia, is the main destination for the reserve driver.

Consistent with Formula 1’s rookie rules, Bearman took his first free practice in Imola in Kevin Magnussen’s VF-24, clocking a respectable fifteenth time. He will again participate in a training session with Haas in Barcelona, this time behind the wheel of Nico Hülkenberg’s car. Team boss Ayao Komatsu has high expectations for the Ferrari protege.

‘We are certainly considering him’

In a conversation with Formula1.com, the Japanese team boss indicates that Oliver Bearman stands a good chance of driving permanently for Haas from 2025. “We are certainly considering him,” says Komatsu. “Otherwise, we wouldn’t let him participate in free practice sessions.” The team boss cannot yet say when his team will finally reveal the line-up for the upcoming season. “I don’t really have a plan,” he explained. “I’m just looking for the right driver. Someone with a lot of experience and the right attitude.”

Bearman, who is currently racing with PREMA in Formula 2, is definitely in the running for a contract with Haas. The Americans still have two seats to fill for 2025. Along with Bearman, Esteban Ocon is also a contender to join Haas next year – the Frenchman will then be released by Alpine.
