Before the spectacle of the title decision and the action in Abu Dhabi unfolds, several rookies will make their appearance during the first free practice. Each team is required to put a rookie in the car at least twice a year during an official free practice, and this weekend many young talents will have the chance to prove themselves. For some, there is more at stake than for others. Below, we have compiled an overview of the rookies who will be in action.
Red Bull – Isack Hadjar
Isack Hadjar is undoubtedly the most talked-about rookie this weekend. The young Frenchman gets his second chance in a Red Bull vehicle, replacing none other than Max Verstappen. After a disappointing debut in Silverstone, Abu Dhabi is crucial for Hadjar, who wants to leave a good impression. Additionally, it’s an important weekend for him in Formula 2. Hadjar is only half a point behind Gabriel Bortoleto in the championship. A strong performance in VT1 could strengthen his chances for an F1 seat in 2025, especially now that Sergio Pérez is under pressure after a difficult season.
Christian Horner has previously expressed his admiration for Hadjar and sees him as a potential candidate for a Red Bull seat. It seems that interest in Franco Colapinto is waning, leaving the door ajar for Hadjar.
Ferrari – Arthur Leclerc
This weekend, Ferrari is set for a historic moment: Arthur Leclerc, the younger brother of Charles Leclerc, will make his debut in VT1. It’s the first time that two brothers will drive as teammates in a Formula 1 session. Arthur is replacing Carlos Sainz and will be behind the wheel of the Ferrari SF-24. The 24-year-old Leclerc has been associated with Ferrari as a development driver for several years and has gained experience in endurance racing this season.
McLaren – Ryo Hirakawa
McLaren is giving one of their most experienced talents, Ryo Hirakawa, the chance to shine in VT1. The Japanese driver is replacing Oscar Piastri, making his debut in an F1 weekend. Hirakawa, known for his successes in endurance racing, has twice won the world title in the WEC with Toyota. Although he is driving for McLaren in VT1 this weekend, he will be testing for Haas after the race weekend.
Visa RB – Ayumu Iwasa
In addition to Hadjar, Ayumu Iwasa will also be in action this weekend. The second Japanese rookie of the weekend is replacing Yuki Tsunoda at Red Bull. Iwasa, a member of the Red Bull junior program since 2021, excelled last year in Formula 2 with three victories. This season, he impressed in the Super Formula with a fifth-place finish in the championship.
Williams – Luke Browning
Luke Browning is getting his first taste of a Formula 1 weekend. The Brit, who impressed this year in Formula 3 before moving to F2, is stepping into the Williams FW46. Browning won two races in Formula 3 and finished third in the championship. He is widely praised by team boss James Vowles and will undoubtedly do everything he can to live up to those expectations. After VT1, Browning will also participate in the Young Driver Test.
Aston Martin – Felipe Drugovich
Felipe Drugovich is returning to the driver’s seat of an Aston Martin for his second participation in a VT1 this year. The Brazilian is replacing Lance Stroll, but a permanent seat still seems out of reach for now. Since his Formula 2 title in 2022, Drugovich has had few opportunities to showcase his talent. However, with the arrival of Cadillac in 2026, he remains a name to watch.
For the rookies in Abu Dhabi, VT1 is more than just a moment to rack up miles. It’s a platform to impress team bosses and sponsors. As the season nears its end, these young talents can try to put the final pieces of their Formula 1 dream into place.
