As of 2025, Sauber has yet to sign a second driver. Nico Hülkenberg has already committed to the Swiss racing team, but is still awaiting a future teammate. With Audi’s takeover on the horizon, a strong line-up is crucial. According to Mattia Binotto, who recently took over the reins at Sauber, the team is seeking the right blend of talent and experience.

According to Formula1.com, there are plenty of drivers who could step into Sauber. The team is said to have already held talks with McLaren about Gabriel Bortoleto; the Brazilian talent is part of the Brits’ training program and is also a title contender in Formula 2. In addition, the team is reportedly interested in Ferrari reserve Robert Shwartzman, who already drove a free practice session for Sauber at Zandvoort. Former Formula 2 champion Théo Pourchaire and Liam Lawson are also mentioned as possible options.

Looking Towards the Future: Sauber’s Strategic Decisions

“Our focus is on the coming years, it’s not just about 2025,” Mattia Binotto shared during the race weekend in Italy. “With an eye on the future, this choice is extremely important.” In addition to all the new talent, Sauber also has a ten-time race winner in its ranks. Mercedes veteran Valtteri Bottas would like to sign a new contract with the team.

‘You Have to Make Concessions’

“Valtteri (Bottas) is doing well and I have certainly already spoken to him about the future,” said Binotto. “He made a good first impression, but that being said, there are many drivers on the list. We, as Audi, need to take the time to assess what is best. Hopefully, we can make a choice soon.”

“In the end, you have to compromise,” explained the Sauber executive. “Ideally, you have a talented rookie with the necessary experience. That is of course impossible, so you have to make concessions. Ultimately, the decision is not so difficult – you just have to be sure of what you are doing. It has to be a good driver, but also someone who can lead and support the project. That goes much further than just driving laps on the circuit.”
