Sauber is actively scouting the transfer market. With Audi set to take the helm in Hinwil from 2026, the team is eager to secure a strong line-up as soon as possible. While a deal with Nico Hülkenberg is imminent, Sauber is still awaiting Carlos Sainz’s signature. The Spaniard is the top choice, with Esteban Ocon and Pierre Gasly as potential alternatives. A transfer for both men is not out of the question given Alpine’s dismal performance.
According to German sports news outlet, Sport1, Carlos Sainz, a key figure in the current transfer market, wants to wait for a deal with Audi. The Ferrari driver has made a name for himself this season with multiple podium finishes and a victory in Australia. A new contract has not yet been finalized – Sainz seems to be calmly weighing all options. It was previously revealed that Sauber had given the Spaniard a deadline, which Sport1 reports has been extended until mid-May.
If Sainz does not choose Audi, both Alpine drivers could also be considered for a seat with the Germans. Esteban Ocon and Pierre Gasly are currently having a disastrous season with a struggling Alpine. It’s not unthinkable that they would want to make a switch. For Audi, both Ocon and Gasly could bring a wealth of experience and knowledge to the team. Both drivers have been in the sport for over seven years and each have a Grand Prix to their name.
Bottas and Zhou to be sacked?
Regardless of what happens, it’s clear that Valtteri Bottas and Guanyu Zhou will be the big losers of the Audi takeover. When it comes to the future of the team, there’s virtually no mention of the current line-up. Both drivers have a contract until the end of 2024, after which nothing is set in stone. Zhou made his debut with Sauber (then Alfa Romeo) in 2022. He was joined by Bottas, who had just transferred from Mercedes.
