In recent months, Sergio Pérez has faced a barrage of criticism from the international press. The Mexican driver has been overshadowed by his teammate Max Verstappen, resulting in a significant loss of points. Consequently, his position within Red Bull continues to be questioned. In response, Pérez points to a ‘lack of professionalism’ among the media criticizing him.
In a conversation with the Mexican Banorte, Sergio Pérez was asked how he deals with all the negativity in the press. After all, the media is constantly focused on the differences between Checo and his teammate, and rumors of a possible early dismissal. “With humor,” responded the 34-year-old driver. “To be honest, I laugh at everything that is made up and said.”
This became particularly evident after the Singapore Grand Prix. The media suggested that Pérez would be sacrificed in the run-up to the subsequent race in Austin. In response, he posted a telling movie clip on social media – Leonardo DiCaprio in The Wolf of Wall Street shouting: “I’m not leaving!” And so it happened.
‘Lack of Professionalism’
“There are very professional journalists who do their job well and who ultimately understand,” continued Sergio Pérez. “If you have a bad race, you just have to be honest about it. As an athlete, it’s sometimes hard to face that, but sometimes you just have a bad race or didn’t make the best decisions. That being said, there is also an excess of – let’s say – a lack of professionalism among many European media.”
“I focus on my work and on what I can do,” concluded Pérez. “I determine how I can best present myself as a driver and as a sportsman. That is ultimately the most important thing; everything naturally revolves around my performance in the car.” Despite his confidence, the Red Bull team management has repeatedly hinted that several drivers are vying for Pérez’s seat. Time will tell whether he can fulfill his contract – which technically runs until 2026.
