Rumors of Sebastian Vettel’s potential return to Formula 1 are not new, but now Sauber’s new CEO, Mattia Binotto, has also commented on the German driver. This immediately fuels speculation about a contract with Audi.

For the 2025 season, there is still one vacant spot in Formula 1: the second seat at Audi, or Sauber in this case. Who will be Nico Hülkenberg’s teammate? Current driver Valtteri Bottas is considered by many to be a good candidate based on his experience, Brazilian Formula 2 driver Gabriel Bortoleto is also mentioned despite his McLaren ties, as is reigning Formula 2 champion and Sauber protégé Theo Pourchaire. However, Sebastian Vettel’s name is increasingly being heard in the paddock.

Binotto’s Praise for Vettel

Binotto, the man who replaced Vettel with Carlos Sainz as Ferrari team boss, speaks highly of the German. “I love Sebastian,” he told Sky Sports. “I know him from the division and it’s nice working with him.” Does this hint at a possible F1 comeback for Vettel at Audi? Binotto: “I’ve only been on the job for a few weeks. I want to look around first and listen to the people within the organization. At some point, we will then make a decision. One that is good for Audi, both for 2025 and for the future.”

Vettel: A Valuable Asset for Audi

As a German driver with a wealth of experience, four-time world champion Vettel is an interesting option for Audi in several areas. This includes not only the connection with Binotto, but also with Jonathan Wheatley. He will become team boss at Audi and knows Vettel from their successful joint time at Red Bull.
