Why did Aston Martin owner Lawrence Stroll insist on adding Adrian Newey to his Formula 1 team? Former driver Jacques Villeneuve has an answer to that. However, he questions whether Aston Martin will quickly have a top-notch car with the arrival of the top designer.
Adrian Newey has been a well-known figure in the Formula 1 world for some time, thanks to his designs for multiple championship-winning F1 cars. The Brit has been working with Red Bull since 2006, but decided to switch to Aston Martin in 2024. Newey is allowed to start working with the British team from March 1, 2025. However, according to former driver Jacques Villeneuve, it will take even longer before Aston Martin has a strong car in its hands.
“Adrian Newey can’t design a car on his own,” Villeneuve explains to Spin Casino. “He needs the input of the driver, and the right driver at that. He also needs the right people around him, which he will build up over time. The factory that has been built looks great, but it takes a while for the wind tunnel to work properly.”
World Champion Stroll?
According to Villeneuve, Stroll brought in the British top designer for one important reason. “It will take time. But Newey will be there on time. Lawrence’s (Stroll) goal is to make his son Lance Stroll a world champion. That’s why he’s putting down so much money. That’s why he’s doing all this. Can it happen? Who knows,” concludes the 1997 world champion.”
