As Yuki Tsunoda makes his Red Bull debut this weekend, Liam Lawson returns to Racing Bulls. The 23-year-old driver was demoted back to the secondary team after just two Grands Prix. At the Suzuka circuit, a track he knows well, Lawson gets the chance to make up for his lackluster start to the season. Moreover, he has a competitive car at his disposal with Racing Bulls.

“I can’t wait to race in Japan this weekend,” Lawson responded in the run-up to the Grand Prix. “Suzuka is one of my favorite circuits on the calendar. This weekend offers a great opportunity for me. I’m going to drive for Racing Bulls again and I’m really looking forward to working with the team. As always, I will give it my all.” The New Zealander hopes to stand out in the more predictable VCARB 02.

Pursuit of Points at Suzuka

His new teammate, 20-year-old Isack Hadjar, is also aiming for a strong result in Suzuka. The French-Algerian rookie is chasing his first Formula 1 points. He considers Japan one of his favorite countries and is familiar with the famous Suzuka International Racing Course. “I’m very excited to be in Japan,” Hadjar said. “It’s probably my favorite destination on the calendar. I’m curious about the absurd speeds and what we can achieve as a team. The goal is, of course, to fight for points.”

After two difficult Grands Prix, Lawson was demoted back to Racing Bulls last week. The New Zealander repeatedly qualified in last place and failed to score points for the team. Racing Bulls veteran Yuki Tsunoda inherits his seat and finally makes his long-awaited debut with the main team. It took a full four seasons before the driver from Sagamihara was promoted. Better late than never, the Japanese fans will think.
