Sergio Pérez is still awaiting confirmation regarding his future with Red Bull. The Mexican driver has been underperforming for some time with the Austrian racing team, contributing to the loss of the constructor’s title. Alexander Albon understands the difficult position Pérez finds himself in. The Williams driver knows from experience that being Max Verstappen’s teammate is not an easy task.
Pérez reportedly had a discussion with team boss Christian Horner and advisor Helmut Marko about his continued service with the Austrian racing team immediately after the last race weekend in Abu Dhabi. However, it is still unknown what was decided about the Mexican’s future at Red Bull.
Alexander Albon, who was Max Verstappen’s teammate for a year and a half, understands why Pérez is struggling to compete with the Dutch driver. “It’s a difficult situation,” says the Williams driver. “I think first and foremost, you have to appreciate Max’s talent. That’s number one. Number two is that it’s not always comfortable to drive that car.
Driving Style
According to Albon, the way Max Verstappen prefers to set up his RB car is not always comfortable for his teammates to drive. “I’ve said it a few times now, I think he likes to drive the car in a very different way. It’s not easy for other drivers to adapt to it. I think it would be difficult for anyone to be his teammate,” emphasized the British Thai.
The Williams driver observed how Pérez was able to handle the RB20 at the beginning of 2024. “When the upgrades came and Max felt more ‘at ease’ with the car, Checo had a bit more difficulty. I think Max likes to see the car set up in a certain way. The team then does that for him.”
