In a surprising turn of events, Valtteri Bottas has reportedly secured a new contract with Sauber. Over the past few weeks, the Finnish driver’s future seemed uncertain as the team was frequently seen courting young talents like Franco Colapinto and Gabriel Bortoleto. Bottas, currently in his thirteenth Formula 1 season, has yet to make a significant impact this year.

According to the Swiss newspaper Blick, Sauber intends to continue with Valtteri Bottas for one more year before the team is taken over by Audi. The 35-year-old driver is said to have signed a new contract with the Swiss racing team this week. In this scenario, it appears that teammate Guanyu Zhou may have to step aside – Nico Hülkenberg has already committed to the team for several years.

No Rookies

In recent weeks, Sauber seemed to be opting for a young talent. McLaren junior Gabriel Bortoleto was often linked to the Formula 1 team, as was Franco Colapinto. However, by continuing with Valtteri Bottas for another year, the team can continue to benefit from his years of experience. The Finn has won five constructors’ titles with Mercedes and has ten Grand Prix victories to his name.

Audi could benefit from two veterans in this case. Nico Hülkenberg, at 37 years old no longer a rookie, has impressed at Haas over the past two years. By retaining Bottas for another year, Sauber lays a strong foundation before Audi takes over in 2026. From that point on, CEO Mattia Binotto can appoint a younger driver to take over from Bottas.
