Valtteri Bottas: The Mentor Role at Mercedes and Future F1 Plans
Mercedes

Valtteri Bottas plans to support Andrea Kimi Antonelli during his first season in Formula 1. The Finn himself is returning as a reserve driver for Mercedes after a three-year stint at Sauber. With his years of experience, he hopes to assist the 18-year-old Antonelli as much as possible, while also secretly considering his own future in Formula 1.

While Sauber is opting for a completely new line-up this year with Nico Hülkenberg and Gabriel Bortoleto, Valtteri Bottas is returning to the Mercedes team. The eccentric Finn once played second fiddle there for five years – helping the team to five consecutive constructors’ titles in the shadow of Lewis Hamilton. As a test and reserve driver, Bottas will again play a crucial role at Mercedes in 2025, not least as a mentor for debutant Andrea Kimi Antonelli.

‘Busy Year’

“I think you could say that I’m becoming a sort of mentor,” Bottas recently responded to Sky Sports. “As a newcomer to the sport, there are so many things you have to learn,” he referred to the young Antonelli. “I can certainly help with that. It’s my job to support the team as best as possible. ‘Kimi’ is ultimately a rookie, so he will probably need more help than George (Russell).”

Bottas also emphasized that he will have access to all of Mercedes’ data and will be actively involved in various race weekends. After all, there’s a chance he may need to replace Antonelli or George Russell. “Thanks to me, the team has an extra pair of hands during Grand Prix,” he explained. “For instance, I can analyze the data and help establish guidelines. Moreover, I will be involved in all meetings and can assist in the simulator. It’s going to be a busy year, but I’m looking forward to it.” If Valtteri Bottas impresses in his reserve role, he could still compete for a permanent spot on the grid. The new Cadillac team, which is set to make its debut next year, has reportedly shown interest in an experienced driver like Bottas.
