Williams Eyes Carlos Sainz in Strategic F1 Move, Albon Welcomes Potential Team Shift

June 21st, 2024, 9:15 AM

Williams is pulling out all the stops to bring Ferrari driver Carlos Sainz to Grove. Alex Albon, who has already signed a multi-year contract with the British team, would thus be joined by the three-time race winner. Albon had to bow out early in Canada after his FW46 took a hit from Sainz. However, within one team, the British-Thai driver expects few problems.

Leading up to the Spanish Grand Prix, Albon was asked about his relationship with Carlos Sainz. All signs point to the Spaniard soon having to choose between Sauber and Williams. The entire Formula 1 world is waiting for Sainz’s decisive transfer – it is expected to give a significant boost to the driver carousel. Several drivers are dependent on his decision.

Albon Discusses Relationship with Sainz and Future Teammates

“Just as good as with all other drivers,” Albon said about his relationship with Sainz. Williams team boss James Vowles makes no secret of his desire to secure the Spaniard. During the race weekend in Canada, it became clear that the 45-year-old Brit has a favorite in mind. “Goal number one is Carlos,” he confirmed to Sky Sports. “Vowles is definitely playing an open hand,” Albon also knows.

The British-Thai driver himself is not so concerned with future teammates. “It doesn’t matter much to me,” Albon admitted, although he recognizes that Sainz brings several advantages. “If you look at his experience and knowledge, he is definitely an asset. Williams is really a long-term project, so we need good feedback. When I came here after my time at Red Bull, I was able to give the team some input. Whoever is contracted, I think a bit of experience is really important.”

Logan Sargeant’s Future

Albon’s current teammate, Logan Sargeant, is most likely to be sacrificed in 2025. The American seems to have improved little compared to last year. Whether he will have to give up his seat to Carlos Sainz, or to another newcomer, is still a question.

“It makes little sense to talk about it now,” Albon responded. “He has done great in the past races. It’s not as if we have the same car – in Spain we will really have the same material. Sargeant is a fantastic driver, who can show a lot of raw speed.”
